Mission clients use computers for education, job searches and much more. In addition to the Rescue Mission, Tacoma Housing Authority and People’s Community Center are also Lift Zones partners with Comcast. This three-pronged approach gives those without access the needed resources to successfully get online. The programming includes digital literacy training, access to a low-cost Internet-ready computer, and Internet service for $9.95 a month. What makes Internet Essentials unique is it offers wraparound programming that directly addresses a lack of internet adoption. This includes more than 560,000 in Washington, making Internet Essentials the state’s largest and most comprehensive broadband adoption program. The Lift Zones program is an extension of Comcast’s Internet Essentials low-income internet adoption program, which has helped more than 10 million low-income people nationwide connect to the internet at home.

"Falling offline on the internet was just awful, right in the middle of classes, and it was so awesome that Comcast stepped in and provided us with the resources for internet access. "We use it for classroom time, helping the children with online schooling, and also the families need to access the different learning things they were doing with school because their schools closed as well,” Jackson said. By the time Washington state schools were shut down in March 2020, the Mission was up and ready to go with the best online access available. It is especially critical in helping the Mission’s young and adult students alike stay on top of their schoolwork remotely. Through the company’s new "Lift Zones" program, Comcast installed free wi-fi that gives faster speed and an uninterrupted internet connection, which Jackson said makes a world of difference for clients and the entire Rescue Mission staff. This is where Comcast came in do something about it. She said about 110 of the shelter’s residents need access to the Mission’s internet service, but problems with connectivity and reliability were frustrating and a roadblock to the shelter achieving the high level of service it is dedicated to providing. At the Mission’s Adams Street Family Shelter, Jackson and her team currently assist 38 families with case management, housing resources, education and employment assistance. "It definitely brought on its own uncertainties and challenges alongside the homelessness the families are experiencing,” Rescue Mission youth program manager Cassandra Crosby Jackson said about COVID’s impact. This was compounded by a marked increase in people losing their job and home due to the pandemic and seeking help from places like the Tacoma Rescue Mission. Social service agencies and organizations offering resources were forced to conduct business remotely, which presented big challenges for those without a phone or computer access. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit Washington state and shutdowns disrupted life for everyone, it brought heightened struggles for people already vulnerable from experiencing homelessness.
